Not so long ago, the epithet “ambitious” sounded like a condemnation, but today it is an advantage. Should we strive for new achievements or is it better to moderate our desires? Answers of the social psychologist Elena Pavlyuchenko.
Psychologies: Are there a good ambition for us?
Elena Pavlyuchenko: There are few unequivocally good or bad in the world, if you do not take biology. Yes, and here: pure water is good, but if you have the task of poisoning the enemy, then the good will be poisoned. Have always been both ambitious and non -ambitious people. Even within the framework of the same culture, we hear both panegyrics https://jaysbrewing.com/wp-content/pages/comprehensive-review-of-mr-sloty-casino-what-to-expect.html of ambitions and pamphlets. “How beautiful to set big goals and achieve them” – and “My God, how the careerists who do not think about the eternal”.
This is a normal multipolar society. And wherever the situation swings, no matter what a challenge is abandoned to us by reality, there are like those who jump up to the barricades or scream “Let’s go to the North Pole!”And those who will explain how important humility, asceticism, rejection of excessive consumption. So not one or the other is good or bad. The question is more about the relevance for the environment, for the situation. If you look at the current culture, now it encourages ambitions. It is no coincidence that narcissism was seized from the list of painful disorders. He did not disappear, but became the norm, and daffodils are just those who are tuned for achievements and external assessment.
But we are not all the daffodils. Should the others abandon great goals?
Not necessary. The matter, in fact, is not in the size of the goal, but in different styles of life: one is primarily configured for the result, the other to the process. Those who have great ambitions are usually tuned to the result and ignore the process and intermediate steps. If I have a goal “I want to become an universal president”, then when I will become the mayor of the city or the deputy, it will be insignificant for me, although someone else could be proud of this. But compared to the grandiose purpose, these achievements are insignificant.
However, there are those who set a grandiose goal and at the same time do not neglect the process. Let us recall Mahatma Gandhi: he decided without violence to free his native India from English rule – this is a super -grandio goal that was considered an unattainable. And at the same time he rejoiced at small achievements on the way to this goal. But still more often surmBias are associated with the depreciation of the process.
